What does Green Battery do?
Green Battery Inc. is a Tokyo-based company that develops, builds, operates and sells grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Japan. Our batteries capture surplus solar and wind power that would otherwise be curtailed, then supply it back to the grid when demand peaks in the evening.
What is grid-scale battery storage, and why does Japan need it?
Grid-scale battery storage is a large battery facility connected directly to the power grid. It charges when renewable generation exceeds demand and discharges when demand is high. Japan relies on imports for about 99% of its primary energy, yet around 8.5 TWh of clean electricity is curtailed every year because the grid cannot absorb it at the moment it is generated. Every site uses layered protection: battery management systems that monitor cell voltage and temperature 24/7, built-in heat, smoke and off-gas detection linked to automatic suppression, coordination with local fire services before power-up, generous setbacks, low-noise equipment, and round-the-clock remote monitoring.
